I’ve been waiting a long, long time to tell you about this. It is with great excitement (and great anxiety) that I announce the publication of my first fiction novel later this year.
For three years now, I’ve spent a great deal of time working on a series of four young adult sci-fi novels. The idea for the series began as a short story I penned in college and has since unfolded into a tale bigger than I could have ever anticipated.
The first novel, The Lark Descending, went through edits last year. One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do as a writer was to give my story to others and invite them to tear it apart where it needed tearing—to strengthen it where it was weak. The process made the manuscript incalculably better, and spurred my growth as a writer.
It was a trial of sorts. I half expected to get the thing back from the editor with the words, Please try something else. This writing thing isn’t for you. And she certainly did say try something else in many places—but she also really pushed me to make it better, and then to pursue publishing. She truly believed in the story. Her help and encouragement burned away my reservations for setting it loose into the world.
I’m so looking forward to starting this new endeavor, to release these books over the next few years. I hope that you find as much light and life in reading them as I found writing them. Stay tuned.
